To test a smoke detector:
- Press the battery test button on the unit to make sure the battery is properly connected.
- If the smoke detector is functioning properly, the smoke detector will emit a loud beep (or a series of beeps depending on the model).
- If the unit has a battery that is more than a year old, replace the battery.
To replace a smoke detector battery:
- Typically, to remove the smoke detector cover, carefully pull down on the case’s perimeter or twisting the case counterclockwise (the smoke detector should have remodel instruction written on the case).
- Locate the battery case, remove the battery and replace it with a new battery.
- Close the battery case and return the smoke detector to its mounted location.
- Test the smoke detector.
